What does it take to be a great Project Manager?
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
"Do you have what it takes to be a great project manager?" Questions like these often appear in job advertisements. But what does it truly mean to be an outstanding project manager?
In this article, I outline the qualities that are essential for an excellent project manager.
Project Management. A Broad Field...
Project management is a widely discussed topic. It can be everything and nothing. The role of the project manager offers a great scope for interpretation. It ranges from simple coordination tasks to the management of mega-projects.
When I began my career in mechanical and plant engineering 20 years ago, I initially underestimated its complexity and scope. Do I regret choosing this path? No. Was it easy? Certainly not.
Plant construction projects are notably challenging due to their technical complexity and the necessity to coordinate numerous stakeholders. While technical functionality is vital for project success, economic and entrepreneurial strategic factors are equally crucial.
So, What are the Ingredients for a Good and Successful Project Manager?
Based on numerous discussions with colleagues and my own experiences, four crucial pillars have emerged that are essential for successful activity in this dynamic work environment.
The Project Management Essentials:
Personality
Experience
Project Environment
Methodology
Let's Dive Deeper into the Essentials.
Personality
Every project manager is different, and that's a good thing. There are infinitely many different constellations of requirements and participants, there can be no single correct personality structure.
However, good and successful project managers have some things in common:
A deep understanding of their role and a high willingness to take responsibility.
An entrepreneurial spirit that enables them to see projects in the context of company goals and act accordingly.
The ability to react flexibly to changes and to appear diplomatic or determined as needed.
Experience
Experience is acquired by actively working on and leading projects. You are learning continuously:
Learn from mistakes and analyze successes.
Share your knowledge and experiences with others and learn from them.
Develop yourself further through regular reflection and adaptation of your own methods.
Project Environment
Even the best project manager will fail if the work environment is not supportive.
A culture that promotes teamwork and open communication.
Structures that enable efficient work and resources that are available in a timely and appropriate manner.
Knowing and understanding the project stakeholders beyond the project team.
A project manager must also cope with things beyond his own sphere of influence and far beyond the organizational structures. He may not be able to change them, but he must still be able to deal with them.
Methodology
Mastering project management methods and tools is essential, but equally important is the ability to adapt them to the project conditions:
Agile, classic or hybrid approaches must be selected according to project scope and complexity.
Technical know-how should be supplemented by social skills to effectively lead teams and successfully manage stakeholders.
Continuous further education in new methods and technologies keeps you and your projects up to date.
Conclusion
A holistic approach is essential to meet the diverse challenges in project business. As a project manager, you are the central link that connects all disciplines. You monitor and control the interactions of the stakeholders and ensure that the outcome of the project drives the strategic corporate goals.
With these four project management essentials, you are well equipped for all projects.
